A TikTok personality hailing from Lancashire, UK, who openly shared about receiving UK benefits while living in Thailand, has been incarcerated upon her return to the United Kingdom.
Ellis Matthews rose to infamy by discussing on social media how she sustained her £2,300 monthly lifestyle using British taxpayers’ money and giving advice on exploiting the system. Claiming to be living on Disability Living Allowance due to six mental disorders, Matthews found herself in trouble in March 2025 when she and her son were arrested for overstaying their visa in Bangkok. They were detained in harsh conditions at the Mothers and Children Immigration Detention Centre before Matthews was deported without her son.
Upon her return to Lancashire, Matthews was arrested on suspicion of drug-related offenses. She recently appeared in court and admitted to possession and supply of class A and B drugs, leading to a 26-month sentence. The court informed Matthews that her time spent in detention in Thailand would be deducted from her sentence.
With a significant following on TikTok under the username ‘@mumontheruninasia’, Matthews was apprehended during a police raid at her residence in Pattaya. Despite facing criticism, she expressed concerns about returning to the UK out of fear that social services would take custody of her child. She revealed leaving her son with a relative in Thailand due to ongoing online backlash portraying her negatively.
In a statement to MailOnline, Matthews claimed that her videos about receiving benefits were meant as jokes and that she did not actually receive any taxpayer funds during her time in Thailand. She admitted to fabricating stories for followers and financial gain through her TikTok account.
