An acclaimed actress known for her exceptional talent on The Crown has passed away. Jane Lapotaire, a Tony award winner, died after a career spanning more than 60 years in theater and film. The Royal Shakespeare Company expressed their sadness over the news of her death.
Jane, who began her acting career in 1965 with her role as Ruby Birtle in When We Are Married at the Bristol Old Vic, was a founding member of The Young Vic Theatre in 1970 and later joined the RSC in 1974.

In response to her passing, the RSC stated: “We are saddened by the loss of Jane Lapotaire, a truly brilliant actress. Her notable RSC performances include Piaf, for which she received TONY & Olivier awards, and her role as Gertrude alongside Kenneth Branagh in Adrian Noble’s Hamlet.”
Jane gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Marie Curie in a television series in 1977. Fans fondly recalled her performance on social media, expressing their condolences and memories of her work.
Her portrayal of Edith Piaf in a play about the singer’s life earned her critical acclaim, leading to a Tony Award win when the production moved to Broadway in 1980.
Jane’s film and television projects were equally impressive, with notable roles in Lady Jane (1980) as Queen Mary, Downton Abbey, where she played Princess Kuragin, and The Crown, where she portrayed Princess Alice of Battenberg.
Throughout her illustrious career, Jane also depicted opera singer Maria Callas in 1999. A health scare in early 2000 led to a hiatus as she recovered from a cerebral hemorrhage, an experience she later detailed in her bestselling memoir Time Out of Mind.
Fans mourned Jane’s passing on social media, highlighting her exceptional talent and the impact of her diverse roles. Her son, Rowan Joffe, a screenwriter and director, survives her.
