“TfL Introduces Babies on Board Badge for Pregnant Commuters”

A special badge has been introduced to assist pregnant women expecting multiple babies in securing a seat on public transportation. Transport for London (TfL) unveiled the Babies on Board badge to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Baby on Board initiative’s launch.

Commuters on crowded buses and trains are encouraged to offer their seats to badge-wearing individuals who are standing. Over 80,000 Baby on Board badges are distributed annually.

These badges were first introduced in March 2006 following a study that revealed pregnant women on the Tube had to stand for an average of five stops before being offered a seat, with 35% never being offered one. Interested individuals can obtain the free badges through TfL’s website or pick them up at the organization’s visitor centers in major stations.

TfL has also partnered with retailer John Lewis and fashion brand Uniqlo in this initiative. Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor for transport, emphasized the importance of encouraging Londoners to be considerate of those who may require a seat more than themselves to enhance the accessibility of public transport.

Emma Strain, TfL customer director, highlighted that the new badge design aims to ensure that “every expectant parent feels supported and acknowledged.” Shauna Leven, CEO of the charity Twins Trust, expressed excitement about the availability of Babies on Board badges for parents expecting multiples, noting the additional challenges faced by those pregnant with twins, triplets, or more due to potential high-risk pregnancies, extreme fatigue, and morning sickness.
