Teenager injured in scaffolding mishap takes first steps after coma

A young teenager who was injured in a scaffolding mishap has taken his first steps after waking up from a nearly week-long coma. Brodie Thomson, a 16-year-old from Denny, sustained a serious head injury when he was hit by a falling pole while working at a residential building in Kirkcaldy on March 10.

Following the accident, Brodie spent six days on a ventilator before being transferred to a specialized unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. A family friend, Lee Combes, shared an update on Brodie’s progress, revealing that he has started walking and communicating, although he is still in the early stages of recovery.

Lee expressed gratitude for Brodie’s improvement but acknowledged that there is a challenging journey ahead with uncertainties about potential long-term effects. A fundraiser initiated by Lee and his company, Windsor Interiors, has raised over £8,500 to support Brodie’s rehabilitation efforts, aiming to reach a target of £10,000 through generous donations.

Brodie had been working at a housing complex owned by Fife Council in Kirkcaldy when the incident occurred. An official investigation is underway by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Both authorities confirmed their involvement, with a Police Scotland spokesperson reporting the incident and the Health and Safety Executive monitoring the situation closely. John Mills, the head of housing at Fife Council, extended support to those affected by the incident, emphasizing the council’s cooperation with the ongoing investigations.
