“Study Reveals Gender Gap in Tyre Knowledge Despite Men’s Confidence”

A recent study involving 2,000 British drivers has uncovered that men tend to believe they are more knowledgeable about tyres than women, with a third of men expressing high confidence compared to only a fifth of women. However, this confidence does not always align with actual knowledge, as revealed by the research.

When asked about the legal minimum tyre tread-depth by tyre retailer Blackcircles, just over half (53%) of male participants answered correctly, while 45% of women got it right. Surprisingly, despite the higher confidence levels reported by men, they were more likely to provide an incorrect response (34%) compared to women (30%).

James Harding, a tyre specialist at Blackcircles with over 16 years of experience, emphasized the importance of knowing the legal minimum tread depth to avoid premature tyre replacements or driving illegally. He suggested using a 20p coin to check the tread depth and advised checking multiple spots around the tyre circumference.

Regarding ‘DOT’ numbers on tyre sidewalls, both men and women struggled to identify their significance. Only two-fifths of men and a third of women correctly identified the meaning as ‘tyre age and manufacturer.’ Men were more inclined to give incorrect answers (30%) than women (24%), while women were more willing to admit they were unsure (44% compared to 30% of men).

James expressed concern about the lack of awareness regarding tyre age, emphasizing that aging rubber can pose safety risks even if the tread looks acceptable.

The study also highlighted a significant knowledge gap in understanding tyre anatomy, as only 24% of respondents correctly identified the tyre shoulder, with over half providing incorrect answers. Checking for shoulder wear is crucial in detecting misalignment or underinflation early on to ensure road safety.

James recommended that individuals unsure of their vehicle and tyre knowledge should refer to their vehicle’s specifications and inspect their tyres for tread depth and age. Seeking expert advice from a local tyre shop can also help ensure the safety and functionality of the tyres.
