After lying dormant for 15 years, the Stadio Flaminio is undergoing a major renovation project to restore its former grandeur. The historic stadium is gearing up to host significant sporting events once again, marking a comeback to the Six Nations scene after a decade-long hiatus.
From 2000 to 2011, the Roman venue was a hub for Italian rugby, welcoming teams from Scotland, Wales, and England. However, a refurbishment of the Stadio Olimpico in 2008 prompted the official Six Nations matches to be moved to the larger 70,000-capacity arena, as the Stadio Flaminio was deemed too small.
Previously, Serie A clubs Roma and Lazio used the Stadio Flaminio as their home ground before shifting to the Olimpico. With lack of use, the once-vibrant stadium deteriorated over time, but plans are now in motion to revitalize it.
Lazio has put forth a redevelopment proposal for the site, which was officially announced in February, pending approval from Rome’s City Council. Financial arrangements are advancing, with banks expected to provide 59% of the total investment, around £246 million, to be repaid by the club through stadium-generated revenue.
Internal supporters will contribute the remaining £415 million investment, with shareholders anticipated to pitch in between £65 million and £69 million. Construction funding is projected to be secured by 2027, paving the way for the redevelopment to begin.
The aim is to complete the stadium’s overhaul by 2031, with hopes of hosting Euro 2032 alongside Turkey as one of Italy’s main venues. The current capacity of 30,000 spectators is set to double under the proposed plans.
Claudio Lotito, the club president, expressed dedication to the project, emphasizing a commitment to benefit the city’s future. The revitalization scheme entails transforming the stadium into a dual-purpose venue, with the historic ’60s bowl restored as the lower tier, complemented by a modern canopy for weather protection.
Designed to meet UEFA Category 4 standards, the revamped stadium will be capable of hosting major sporting and entertainment events. Additionally, green spaces will be incorporated into the design to help mitigate pollution.
Originally inaugurated in 1959, the Stadio Flaminio was renowned for hosting concerts before becoming a key Six Nations venue. Notable artists like Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Michael Jackson graced the stage, entertaining crowds of up to 45,000 attendees.
While Italian rugby teams currently have no immediate plans to depart the Stadio Olimpico, the impending renovations could prompt a change of venue. Lazio, alongside Roma, currently shares the Olimpico but may transition to the new stadium within the next five years.
