Ian Huntley, the infamous Soham murderer, passed away nine days after a brutal attack in prison, with little mourning for his demise. The 52-year-old was found injured in HMP Frankland, County Durham, and was subsequently put into a medically induced coma from which he would not recover.
Throughout his time in prison, Huntley endured multiple assaults from fellow inmates. Notably, in 2005 at HMP Wakefield, Mark Hobson, a convicted mass murderer, attacked him with boiling water. Subsequently, in 2010, he suffered a neck slashing by armed robber Damien Fowkes, shortly after being transferred to HMP Frankland.
Huntley gained notoriety for the heinous murders of best friends Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells in Soham, Cambridgeshire in 2002. Despite prior allegations of sexual misconduct with young women and teenage girls, Huntley, who worked as a school caretaker at the time, was involved in the search for the missing girls and even participated in media interviews during the investigation.
Having been incarcerated at HMP Frankland since 2008, the prison, known as ‘Monster Mansion,’ houses inmates with intimidating reputations, including the individual suspected of attacking Huntley recently.
Anthony Russell, convicted in 2022 for a series of gruesome crimes, including murder and rape, is believed to be the perpetrator behind the attack on Huntley. Russell’s chilling remarks upon his arrest indicated his involvement in the incident, while Huntley was airlifted for urgent medical care and described as being in critical condition.
Due to the nature of his crimes, Huntley was deeply unpopular among his fellow prisoners, with many harboring animosity towards him based on his reputation rather than his actions. Huntley’s controversial behavior, characterized by erratic mood swings and confrontations with other inmates, further fueled the disdain towards him within the prison walls.
Anecdotes from sources within the prison recounted instances where Huntley reacted violently to taunts about his victims’ attire and past actions. His tumultuous behavior, including attempts to conceal incriminating evidence, exacerbated tensions with other inmates, leading to further hostility towards him.
Despite his incarceration, Huntley’s disturbing behavior persisted as evidenced by his interactions with penpals and attempts to communicate in coded messages, reminiscent of infamous criminal partnerships. His troubling correspondence and expressions of volatile emotions shed light on the complex and disturbed mindset of the convicted murderer.
