Spring sunshine is giving way to an incoming snowfall across several regions, as indicated by new weather forecasts. The GFS weather model predicts snowfall starting early on Friday, March 13, covering a wide area of the UK. While the heaviest snowfall is anticipated in northern Scotland initially, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the northwest of England, including Manchester, are also expected to be impacted. Significant snow accumulation, with up to 12cm in some areas, and temperatures dropping as low as -7C are projected, with blizzards persisting throughout the day.
This sudden snowfall contrasts with recent record-breaking temperatures in some parts of the UK, with London experiencing its hottest day of the year at over 19C. The Met Office has issued a warning of a potential “colder spell” later in the month, likely after March 20. The Met Office’s forecast for March 20 to April 4 suggests unsettled weather conditions across the UK initially, with rain and strong winds affecting various regions. Later in March, weather patterns may slow down, leading to drier conditions in the north while temperatures remain around average levels.
BBC Weather also anticipates “wintry showers” in the coming days, with cooler temperatures and the possibility of snow showers over higher ground in the north of the UK. Overall, weather systems coming in from the Atlantic are expected to bring variable temperatures and showery weather during this period.
