Snow Forecast: Major UK Cities Facing Late-March Chill

Advanced weather models indicate the possibility of snow hitting multiple major cities later this month.

Although the Met Office confirmed yesterday as the hottest day of the year so far, weather projections suggest a potential drop in temperatures leading to wintry showers by the end of March.

The GFS weather model predicts snowfall in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern regions of England during the early hours of March 30, with a subsequent southward movement affecting various major cities, potentially including London.

By 9 am, the models show snowfall across Wales, the north-west, the Midlands, East Anglia, and parts of the southeast, with cities like London, Birmingham, Norwich, Nottingham, and Manchester likely to be impacted.

The data suggests temperatures could drop as low as -5°C in Scotland, -2°C in Northern England, 0°C in Northern Ireland, 1°C in Wales, and 2°C in the Midlands.

Fortunately, snow accumulation is expected to be limited. Up to 16cm (six inches) could settle over Scottish hills, with 2cm in northern England, but snow is not anticipated to linger in more southern areas.

BBC Weather also forecasts cold spells towards the end of the month. The outlook from March 23 to 29 indicates a transition to wet and windy weather initially, followed by a cooler interlude with possible wintry showers over higher terrain, mainly in the northern regions.

The latter part of the week might see drier conditions as high pressure strengthens over or near the UK. Despite the chance of sporadic light rain, precipitation levels are likely to be below average, with the risk of fog patches increasing in calmer conditions.

Any alterations to this weather pattern could impact the forecast, potentially leading to prolonged cold and unsettled conditions if high pressure shifts westward from the UK.
