A Russian SU-30 fighter jet breached NATO airspace on Wednesday, causing an emergency reaction. Estonia’s foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, reported that the jet intruded into Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland for a brief period. The Russian aircraft, without a flight plan and no communication with Estonian air traffic control, prompted a protest with Russia’s top diplomat in Tallinn being summoned to explain the incident. In response, NATO’s Baltic Air Policing dispatched Italian Air Force units from Ämari Air Base to monitor the situation. Tsahkna clarified that although there was no direct threat to Estonian security, this marked the first airspace violation by a Russian warplane this year.
Previously, in September, three Russian MIG-31 jets trespassed into Estonian airspace for 12 minutes, flying over the Vaindloo Island region without permission, two-way radio communication, or transponder signals. Estonian officials strongly criticized the Putin-led government for the incursion, labeling it as “unprecedentedly brutal.” NATO confirmed intercepting the aircraft, condemning the Russian behavior as reckless and highlighting NATO’s readiness to respond promptly to such infringements.
Following last year’s incident, Tsahkna emphasized the need for swift reinforcement of political and economic pressures to counter Russia’s escalating border provocations and aggression. Email updates are available for receiving the latest news stories.
