Russia’s Security Council deputy chairman has raised concerns about the potential for a “zombie apocalypse” orchestrated by the United States.
Dmitry Medvedev, a former president of Russia, expressed worries that American biological research advancements could trigger deadly outbreaks reminiscent of the popular TV series ‘The Last of Us’.
In an essay focusing on emerging technological threats, Medvedev highlighted the risks posed by developments in biotechnology and military research in the US, suggesting they could lead to catastrophic epidemics. He did not address the use of nerve agents and poisons by Vladimir Putin, including against Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
This warning follows the recent identification of epibatidine, a potent neurotoxin naturally found in South American dart frogs, in biological samples linked to Navalny. Navalny, who died in custody at a remote Arctic penal colony, was 47 years old at the time of his death on February 16, 2024.
In a detailed article titled “New Technologies: A Stairway to Heaven or a Road to Hell,” Medvedev suggested that the scenario of a zombie apocalypse, as depicted in ‘The Last of Us,’ may not be purely fictional in the future.
Medvedev alleged that the US has established a global network of approximately 400 biological laboratories worldwide, accusing Washington of conducting research that could facilitate the spread of dangerous diseases. These accusations have been consistently refuted by Western governments as misinformation.
“The United States has established a worldwide military biological network, utilizing other nations for experimentation,” Medvedev stated.
He warned about the potential creation and dissemination of artificially engineered pathogens through advancements in genetic engineering and synthetic biology, posing challenges in tracking their origins.
Additionally, Medvedev cautioned about the risks associated with artificial intelligence, including job displacement, cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, and the possibility of AI taking control of essential systems like nuclear power plants.
Medvedev also criticized Western tech companies and governments for allegedly using digital platforms to exert control over populations through algorithms and data manipulation.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Medvedev, who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012, has emerged as a prominent anti-Western voice in the Kremlin. He frequently makes bold statements online predicting dire scenarios such as the collapse of the West, nuclear conflicts, or Ukraine’s destruction.
Medvedev suggested that the war in Ukraine, which he described as a crisis driven by countries with anti-Russian sentiments aiming for Russia’s defeat, will eventually be overshadowed by global concerns about technological threats to humanity.
