Princess Kate had a humorous reaction when invited to participate in a traditional dance with Hindu worshippers during a solo visit to Leicester. The Duchess visited the city to honor its diversity, creativity, and cultural heritage.
During her surprise visit to one of the largest Indian communities in the UK, Kate explored the Shreeji Dham Haveli Hindu Temple and met with renowned choreographer Aakash Odedra’s dance company. She received floral garlands and a bindi on her forehead upon arrival, and was then invited to join a cultural dance.
Mayur Kachela, from the temple’s executive committee, hosted the visit and playfully mentioned that Kate didn’t need much convincing, responding with a light-hearted “Oh, go on then” when asked to join the dance.
Kate willingly participated in a traditional garba dance with a group of women, circling around a statue of Lord Krishna. She expressed her children’s love for dance after receiving a red rose from the performers. Kate also made a gesture of pouring milk as an offering to Krishna and received gifts of a saree and a gold scarf before enjoying a vegetarian lunch.
The Princess of Wales then explored Leicester’s ‘Golden Mile’, meeting locals celebrating the Holi festival. Her first stop was at The Aakash Odedra Company, an organization promoting community well-being through dance and the arts.
Kate’s visit was highly appreciated by Mr. Kachela, who described it as “absolutely amazing,” emphasizing the importance of understanding and acknowledging diverse faiths and religions. As she left the community center, she was warmly greeted by crowds offering hugs and requesting selfies.
During her walk along the Golden Mile, Kate received warm greetings from locals, including blessings and well-wishes. The community showed their excitement by honking horns and waving as she passed by.
