Police have unveiled surveillance footage as they urgently seek a woman who boarded a bus before disappearing a week ago.
Concern continues to mount for Vitoria Figueiredo-Barreto, a native of Brazil, who was last sighted at the University of Essex campus on March 3. The 30-year-old psychologist was captured on CCTV boarding a local bus and arriving in Brightlingsea at 2:30 pm.
Vitoria was clad in a dark coat, blue turtleneck jumper, light blue jeans, and black trainers when she boarded the 87 service last Tuesday. Subsequent footage indicates her jumping over a boatyard fence shortly after midnight on March 4.
An intensive search for the psychology student is ongoing. Authorities express deep worry over Vitoria’s sudden disappearance while she was in the UK to explore the possibility of pursuing a doctorate.
Vitoria had been residing with a female friend in Colchester, Essex. During her stay in the UK, she reportedly engaged in research and academic training activities at the University of Essex.
Her belongings were discovered by a passerby on Copperas Road yesterday afternoon.
Liliane Silva, Vitoria’s friend, mentioned that Vitoria had planned to work on a project at the university library before going missing. The duo had also intended to visit Cambridge together over the weekend. “In our view, she boarded the bus on the wrong side of the road, the Brazilian side,” Liliane remarked.
“It’s difficult to eat, sleep, or think at all. We know she is likely in distress, worried, and struggling,” Liliane added.
“We are unsure of the reason and prefer not to judge at this time; we simply want her back with us. Her behavior has never been like this, which is why we are extremely concerned. Please aid us in locating this remarkable individual who has made a significant impact in this world.”
Essex Police affirmed their unwavering commitment to locating Vitoria. Detective Superintendent Anna Granger emphasized, “This is not simply a police investigation; at its core, it involves a missing daughter, partner, and friend who is dearly loved.”
“Every officer involved in this search is dedicated to locating Vitoria. Our efforts have concentrated on CCTV analysis, tracking her movements from Wivenhoe to Brightlingsea on the bus and subsequently in Hurst Green when she disembarked,” Detective Supt Granger stated.
“The discovery of her bag near Copperas Road is now a key focus for us. Each search team is meticulously combing the area, ensuring no potential lead is overlooked.”
“I also urge the Brightlingsea community to come forward. Have you seen Vitoria? Have you checked your CCTV footage? Even the smallest detail can be crucial. And to Vitoria’s loved ones – we are tirelessly working to locate her,” added Detective Supt Granger.
Authorities urge anyone with information to immediately contact 999, referencing incident 622 of March 4.
