The parents of 22-year-old George Lusby have issued a cautionary message about the dangers of child criminal exploitation following their son’s tragic passing. George passed away at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital after sustaining a severe brain injury from a cardiac arrest in August 2025. Despite efforts to turn his life around in his final months, his past continued to haunt him.
During the inquest, it was revealed that while medical records showed signs of substance misuse and mental health issues, this was just one aspect of George’s story. His parents described him as a vibrant and intelligent individual with distinctive bright orange hair. His mother shared how George’s vulnerability stemmed from experiences of bullying after enrolling at Wymondham College, where he faced challenges.
The inquest disclosed that George was lured and manipulated by county lines drug dealers after joining the school, starting with innocuous tasks that escalated into coercion for money and threats. His father emphasized that George was deliberately exploited by adults preying on vulnerable youths for drug trafficking.
Medical reports indicated George’s struggles with depression, PTSD, and anxiety disorders, along with his coping mechanisms involving substance abuse. Despite seeking mental health services and his family’s support, George faced difficulties in adhering to treatments and appointments due to his traumatic encounters with drug gangs.
In a positive turn of events prior to his demise, George made significant progress by engaging in work, fitness activities, obtaining a driver’s license, and saving for the future. He was described as hardworking and forward-thinking by his employers. However, a night out with friends led to tragic consequences as George was found unresponsive the following day, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent diagnosis of severe brain damage.
After a heartbreaking decision to discontinue treatment, George passed away in August 2025 due to anoxic brain injury resulting from cardiac arrest, exacerbated by alcohol and non-prescribed drugs. The coroner acknowledged the complexities in George’s life, emphasizing the broader context beyond the medical cause of death.
In a poignant statement, George’s grieving parents highlighted the pervasive threat of child criminal exploitation. They cautioned that no child is immune to such dangers. The Samaritans were also recommended as a support resource for individuals in need of assistance.
