Rebecca Adlington has shared her experience of expecting a ‘rainbow baby’ following the recent arrival of her third child. The 37-year-old former Olympic swimmer is now a proud mother to a baby girl named Thea Joy Parsons, whom she welcomed with her husband, Andy.
Having gone through a heartbreaking miscarriage in August 2022 that required emergency surgery, and another in October 2023 when a 20-week scan revealed no heartbeat, Rebecca expressed that her family feels complete with the birth of baby Thea. Despite the joy of welcoming her daughter, she admitted to feeling intense anxiety throughout her latest pregnancy due to the previous losses.
Reflecting on her journey, Rebecca emphasized how different this pregnancy felt compared to the previous ones. She described the overwhelming anxiety she experienced, highlighting the constant fear of something going wrong until the baby was safely in her arms.
In a podcast interview with Netmums just before Thea’s birth, Rebecca voiced her concerns about jinxing the pregnancy and the lingering anxiety until the baby’s arrival. She shared insights into the emotional rollercoaster of carrying a rainbow baby and the constant battle with fear and uncertainty.
Rebecca, who has a son named Albie with Andy and a daughter named Summer from a previous marriage, took to Instagram in December to express the unique challenges of her current pregnancy. She mentioned the absence of traditional pregnancy celebrations like gender reveals and baby showers, attributing it to her fears and apprehensions as a rainbow baby mom.
The Olympian also opened up about her experiences with miscarriage, underscoring the importance of counseling in helping her and her husband navigate through their grief. She commended the Petals charity for providing specialized counseling services to parents dealing with baby loss, highlighting the positive impact it had on their healing process.
Rebecca concluded by emphasizing the significance of seeking support and counseling during times of loss, acknowledging the profound impact it had on her and her partner’s emotional well-being. She encouraged others facing similar challenges to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed.
