“Oldest Cinema in Britain Faces Closure Threat”

After operating for 115 years, one of the oldest cinemas in Britain faces the possibility of closure. The Ultimate Picture Palace, which became community-owned in 2022, is at risk due to the need for essential repairs and upgrades. Located in a Grade II listed building, the cinema cannot be demolished but could potentially be repurposed. The current lease granted by landlord Oriel College extends until 2037.

Supporters of the cinema are rallying to raise £50,000 to fund the necessary renovations, with shareholders already contributing £28,000. The Ultimate Picture Palace has been recognized by Time Out as the 21st best cinema in Britain, known for its intimate setting and single screen. Despite being situated away from the city center, the cinema attracts a rapid influx of patrons, with nearby pubs offering post-movie refreshments.

Featuring a diverse selection of mainstream, classic, and international films, the cinema remains a cultural hub. The management has launched a campaign to secure a long-term lease to ensure the venue’s sustainability and accessibility enhancements. Despite the cinema’s significance and popularity, the landlord’s plans for a new development pose a threat to its future. Community efforts aim to persuade Oriel College to extend the lease and safeguard the cinema’s legacy.
