North London Builder Denies Being Banksy Amid Revelations

A North London builder, George Georgiou, has vehemently refuted claims of being the renowned street artist Banksy. Speculation arose when Georgiou was seen installing protective Perspex around one of Banksy’s artworks at the Hornsey Road tree mural in London in March 2024. Despite recent investigations by Reuters revealing Banksy’s identity as Robin Gunningham from Bristol, images of Georgiou from 2024 have resurfaced.

Dismissing the rumors, Georgiou expressed frustration in an interview with the Daily Mail, labeling the Banksy allegations as “annoying” and denying any association with the elusive artist. He clarified that he was merely safeguarding the artwork as a maintenance task for a building owned by his sons. Georgiou humorously remarked that Banksy, if found, would not be engaged in such manual labor due to his presumed wealth.

Addressing his accusers, Georgiou urged them to “grow up” and cease the unwarranted speculations. Despite initially finding the situation amusing, the London-born builder, who hails from a Greek family, expressed a desire for the ordeal to conclude, emphasizing the disruption it has caused in his daily life.

In a separate development, Reuters reported over the weekend that Robin Gunningham, operating under the alias David Jones, was identified as Banksy. The investigation also suggested that Banksy might have had a collaborator, referred to as a “famous painting partner,” aiding in the creation of his enigmatic artworks. Banksy’s anonymity has contributed to the exorbitant prices fetched by his pieces in the art market.

Journalists conducted extensive research, including interviews with insiders and examination of previously undisclosed U.S. documents and police records, in an attempt to unveil Banksy’s identity. Eyewitness accounts reported Banksy’s presence in Ukraine in 2022 for one of his iconic pieces, with locals recalling a man named Dave Jones and photographer Giles Duley entering Ukraine on October 28, 2022.
