An explosion at a nightclub in Peru has resulted in over 25 individuals being wounded, including several teenagers, authorities have verified. The incident, which occurred in the early hours at the Dali nightclub in Trujillo, left a total of 33 people injured, with five individuals in critical condition following the attack on Saturday night.
The local Emergency Operations Centre in Peru confirmed the explosion, which has left the country grappling with rising violence and crime. The perpetrators of the attack and their motives remain unknown at this time.
Among the injured, five individuals are in serious condition, as stated by Gerardo Florián Gómez, the executive director of the Trujillo Health Network. Some victims have undergone amputations and surgery for shrapnel wounds, including three minors aged 16 and 17.
Witness Fiorella Mantilla described the blast, mentioning she had glass shards in her legs and likened the sound to a sudden shutdown of the sound system in the nightclub.
This incident follows a previous explosion in the same city that damaged homes but did not result in casualties. The region has been plagued by extortion and illegal mining, with an alarming number of explosions reported in recent years, mostly in Trujillo.
Authorities have linked these incidents to organized criminal groups involved in extortion, including Los Pulpos, whose criminal activities extend beyond Peru to neighboring countries like Chile.
