Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has reversed his position on the Iran conflict amid growing concerns about rising energy costs. Initially criticizing the government for not participating in the initial US-Israeli strikes, Farage has now shifted gears, stating, “Let’s avoid getting entangled in another foreign conflict.”
This change comes amidst conflicting views within Reform UK regarding military intervention in Tehran. While Deputy leader Richard Tice and member Nadhim Zahawi supported British involvement, Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick opposed it.
According to a source from the Labour Party, Farage and Reform had been advocating for military action against Iran but are now backtracking due to rising petrol prices, resulting in confusion and instability in their foreign policy stance.
During a visit to a petrol station in Derbyshire, Farage emphasized the UK’s limited defense capabilities and expressed reservations about joining military attacks. He criticized the British government’s initial decision to withhold British bases for US attacks on Iran, stressing the importance of swiftly resolving the conflict.
Regarding President Trump, Farage acknowledged their differences but highlighted the importance of the US-UK relationship. He criticized the suggestion to cancel the King’s visit to America, emphasizing the need to maintain respect between the two nations.
When asked about potential UK troop involvement in a US request for assistance, Farage dismissed the idea, citing insufficient troop numbers and opposing the deployment of boots on the ground.
Reform’s Greater Lincolnshire Mayor, Andrea Jenkyns, did not rule out the possibility of deploying troops in the Middle East, while Labour Party chairwoman Anna Turley criticized Farage for advocating escalation and highlighted Keir Starmer’s steady leadership compared to Farage and Kemi Badenoch.
