“New University Added to UK Meningitis Outbreak List”

A recent report has identified educational institutions affected by confirmed or suspected cases of meningitis, with a new university added to the list. This development follows the unfortunate deaths of two students and investigations into 18 additional cases by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) stemming from a meningitis outbreak linked to a nightclub in Canterbury, Kent. Among the casualties were an 18-year-old schoolgirl named Juliette and a 21-year-old student from the University of Kent who contracted meningitis B.

Approximately 5,000 students at the Canterbury campus of the University of Kent are being offered the meningitis B vaccine, along with courses of antibiotics, as authorities work swiftly to manage the public health crisis.

The UKHSA was informed of the first meningitis diagnosis on March 13, involving a student from the University of Kent. Health officials later confirmed a case of meningitis at another university, Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent, which was also linked to the Club Chemistry nightclub.

In response, Canterbury Christ Church University stated that one of its students had been diagnosed with meningococcal disease and that support services were being provided to the affected individual and other students. The university clarified that this case was connected to the initial outbreak at Club Chemistry in early March, and emphasized that the risk of transmission within close contacts was low.

At the University of Kent, a sports hall was transformed to accommodate at least 15 vaccination stations for the administration of meningitis B vaccines. A notification to University of Kent students outlined the availability of the menB vaccine for all residents of Canterbury campus halls of residence starting on Wednesday, March 18.
