Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader has declared a commitment to seeking retaliation and maintaining the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, leading to worldwide disruption. Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issued a statement through state television, expressing a determination to avenge not only the deaths of his father and other leaders by the US and Israel but also of every Iranian casualty in the conflict.
He assured the nation of pursuing justice for the martyrs, emphasizing that each Iranian killed by the enemy warrants retribution. Khamenei also pledged to continue targeting Gulf Arab nations and utilizing the blockage of the vital Strait of Hormuz as leverage against the US and Israel. This marked his first public address since assuming leadership following his father’s assassination in an Israeli attack.
Encouraging Gulf Arabs to close down US military bases in the region, Khamenei denounced American protection pledges as deceitful. He hinted at exploring new battlefronts where the enemy is less experienced and vulnerable if hostilities persist. While not providing specifics, Iran has been linked to past assaults on US, Israeli, and Jewish interests globally.
Amid speculations that the 56-year-old leader sustained injuries at the war’s onset, he has remained out of the public eye. His recent statement underscored a readiness to prolong the conflict, which has disrupted global energy flow, international travel, and the security of Gulf Arab states. Iran’s persistent attacks on maritime traffic and energy installations in the Persian Gulf pushed oil prices back above $100 per barrel.
Despite US and Israeli strikes inflicting significant damage on Iran’s leadership, military, and missile capabilities, they have failed to dislodge the government—an objective President Donald Trump has publicly expressed. Iran aims to apply enough economic pressure globally to compel the US and Israel to cease their bombardment initiated on February 28. These strikes resulted in the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba’s father, and the younger Khamenei’s spouse.
Meanwhile, Trump has vowed to complete the mission, asserting that Iran is nearly decimated. He prioritized preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons over addressing escalating oil prices. Simultaneously, Iran-backed Hezbollah militants launched approximately 200 rockets from Lebanon towards northern Israel, prompting retaliatory strikes by Israel in Tehran and Lebanon, resulting in casualties.
The UN refugee agency reported that up to 3.2 million individuals in Iran have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict, with most fleeing major cities towards rural regions. In Lebanon, around 800,000 people have been internally displaced, raising concerns about a looming humanitarian crisis.
