A high-ranking executive at Netflix has responded to recent negative reports suggesting a strained relationship between the streaming service and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Various sources revealed to Variety that the collaboration between Netflix and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had soured, particularly after Netflix ended its support for Meghan’s brand, As Ever, which had been financially backed by Netflix since its establishment in early 2025. Insiders alleged that difficulties in dealing with the Sussexes had led to setbacks in their partnership.
Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, refuted these claims, addressing the speculation during the Next on Netflix event. Bajaria confirmed that Netflix still maintains a partnership with the couple, emphasizing ongoing movie and TV projects in development with them. She highlighted the successful documentary series “Harry & Meghan,” released in December 2022, which followed the couple’s journey and decision to step back from their royal duties.
Regarding the partnership deal, Bajaria noted that deals evolve over time, and not all are renewed, downplaying the significance of any changes. Despite Bajaria’s reassurances, another insider indicated to the Daily Mail that Netflix staff prefer not to air grievances publicly about working with the Sussexes.
In 2025, Meghan and Harry signed a multi-year agreement for film and television ventures with Netflix, which was seen as a step down from their previous deal worth over $100 million (£74 million) signed in 2020. These developments come after Variety published an in-depth analysis on the Netflix-Sussex relationship, shedding light on internal dynamics and challenges faced since the initial collaboration.
Allegations surfaced suggesting discord in meetings where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly caused friction and communication issues with external partners. Controversy arose over claims that Meghan would often interrupt or reinterpret Harry’s statements during discussions. Meghan’s lawyer disputed these claims, attributing them to a biased portrayal of her leadership in the partnership. Prince Harry denied these allegations.
Additionally, Netflix executives were reportedly caught off guard by the Sussexes’ Oprah interview in 2021 and Harry’s memoir release in 2023. Plans for the Harry & Meghan docuseries were adjusted to coincide with the memoir’s launch. Despite internal tensions, a spokesperson for Netflix denied any loss of faith in the couple by top executives.
Insiders revealed a strained atmosphere at Netflix regarding the Sussexes, indicating a shift in sentiment within the organization. However, official statements from Netflix maintain that the relationship remains intact, with ongoing collaborations and mutual respect between the parties.
