“NCP, Britain’s Largest Car Park Operator, Enters Administration”

Britain’s largest car park operator, National Car Parks (NCP), has entered administration, heightening concerns about potential closures of its numerous sites. With 682 employees managing approximately 340 car parks nationwide, including those in prominent urban areas, airports, and hospitals, NCP has faced financial challenges exacerbated by the lingering effects of the Covid pandemic. The company’s struggle stems from a decline in parking demand, particularly in city centers and commuter locations, due to altered work patterns and an excess of vacant spaces in its properties.

The company’s inability to adjust costs or terminate inflexible long-term leases has resulted in sustained financial losses, leading to its current cash flow insufficiency. In response, administrators Zelf Hussain, Rachael Wilkinson, and Toby Banfield from PwC have been appointed to oversee NCP’s operations and evaluate future strategies for the business. Their immediate focus is on stabilizing the company and exploring options to minimize costs, which may involve discussions with site owners and potential divestiture of assets.

PwC emphasized the necessity of reviewing the viability of each location, indicating that site closures might be necessary as part of the restructuring process. Zelf Hussain, the Joint Administrator and PwC partner, highlighted the challenging market conditions NCP has faced and assured that operations are ongoing with staff in place and services unaffected. The administrators plan to engage with stakeholders, including landlords and employees, to consider all possibilities, including a partial or complete sale of the business, to secure the best outcomes for creditors.
