“Murderer Executed Without Apology, Victim’s Family Disappointed”

A convicted murderer declined to offer an apology for the killing of a young mother before facing execution on death row. Michael Lee King’s final statements, focusing on his religious transformation in prison, were criticized by the family of his victim, Denise Amber Lee, whom he raped and murdered nearly two decades ago.

Denise’s father, Richard Goff, expressed disappointment at King’s lack of remorse, suggesting that if he couldn’t genuinely apologize, he should have remained silent. Alongside Denise’s husband Nathan, one of her sons, and other relatives, they attended King’s execution at a state prison in Starke, Florida, all wearing pink shirts in honor of Denise’s favorite color.

Despite not offering an apology, King spoke about his spiritual journey, stating that he tried to live as a devout follower of Jesus while acknowledging the support he received from Catholic volunteers and the execution team. After the execution, Mr. Goff emphasized the importance of speaking sincerely from the heart.

Noah Lee, Denise’s son who was just two years old when his mother was killed, expressed his ongoing grief at not having the chance to know and be raised by her. King had abducted Denise, tied her up in his car, sexually assaulted her, and eventually shot her in the face in a remote area before burying her. He was caught after a witness reported hearing screams from his vehicle.

Evidence linking King to the crime, including Denise’s belongings, was found at his residence and in his vehicle. Following the tragedy, the Denise Amber Lee Act was unanimously passed by the Florida Legislature to improve 911 operator training. The Denise Amber Lee Foundation, established by Nathan, her husband, continues its efforts to enhance training and raise awareness nationwide.

The foundation highlighted the importance of effective communication in emergencies, citing multiple calls made on the day of Denise’s abduction that failed to prevent the tragic outcome.
