“Mum hit with £11,000 fine for batteries in toys”

A mother of five expressed her dismay over a hefty fine levied by a waste disposal company for disposing of her children’s toys, unknowingly containing prohibited items. Krystal Ogier, 33, faced a staggering £11,000 penalty after Island Waste, the waste disposal firm she hired while relocating, discovered that four toys in her trash contained 23 AA batteries, each carrying a fine of £500.

Krystal was devastated upon learning about the fine, admitting it was a genuine mistake as she was unaware of the batteries inside the toys. Despite the company reducing the penalty to £1,000, she acknowledged her irresponsibility and the impact it had on her finances. Recognizing the hazards of improper battery disposal, she criticized the steep penalty charges but accepted her fault in not being cautious.

Island Waste defended its penalty system, emphasizing the importance of proper battery disposal to prevent environmental harm and safety risks. The firm’s director, Faye Grime, highlighted the online warnings and criteria customers must adhere to, including confirming inspection of items before disposal. While the company aims for compliance rather than fines, penalties serve to underscore the dangers of improper waste disposal, especially concerning batteries.

Krystal, now advocating for awareness of such penalties, urges others to be vigilant and informed when discarding items to avoid similar situations. The Office for Product Safety and Standards also warns of the environmental hazards posed by batteries in landfills.
