“Mum Faces Homelessness Deadline Over £180K Extension”

A mother in Aughton, facing potential homelessness, received a directive from the local council to dismantle her £180,000 extension that was constructed over two years ago. Suzie Cavadino, a long-term resident of Sunnyside, invested in replacing her conservatory with the new extension, which includes a kitchen, a bedroom partitioned for her children, and a boiler. West Lancashire Council required the extension to be removed by the upcoming month end, citing it as incongruent with the neighborhood’s ambiance.

Despite having been assured by her builder that planning permission was unnecessary for the project, Suzie found out post-completion that consent was indeed required. This discrepancy led to an ongoing conflict between Suzie and the council, with no resolution in sight. The council has upheld the enforcement notice, mandating compliance by April 24, 2026, following a decision by the Planning Inspectorate.

Suzie expressed concerns about potential homelessness for herself and her children if the extension is forcibly demolished by the council. While the council offered support and alternatives, the legal obligations stemming from the Planning Inspectorate’s decision have constrained any flexibility in this matter. Suzie’s appeal against the demolition order was dismissed by the Planning Inspectorate, emphasizing the adverse impact of the extension on the property’s aesthetics.

Maintaining that the extension harmonizes with the area and does not disrupt neighboring properties due to its location backing onto fields, Suzie highlighted the financial burden of demolishing the extension. She faces uncertainty regarding the repercussions of missing the compliance deadline and the possibility of losing their home entirely. The looming threat of homelessness looms large as the deadline approaches, leaving Suzie and her family in a precarious situation.
