Mother’s Neglect Leads to Infant’s Tragic Death

A tragic incident unfolded when a mother discovered her one-year-old son lifeless in his crib after an unsafe sleeping setup led to suffocation. Amirah Eziah Moodie, aged 25, was arrested and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death. The mother had put her son down for a nap at 9am and fell asleep in her room for several hours.

Upon returning home at 2pm, the child’s father also fell asleep without checking on the baby. It was only at 3pm that the mother found the infant motionless in the crib. The police described the house as extremely messy, with hazardous conditions present in the child’s bedroom, including an unsafe bedding arrangement that led to the tragic incident.

Emergency services were contacted at 4:22pm on November 14, 2025, but attempts to revive the child were unsuccessful. Moodie and the child’s father were taken in for questioning. Moodie admitted to a stressful night and morning, mentioning taking a THC gummy due to financial worries. She discovered her son with a sheet wrapped around his head, leading to his tragic death.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death as asphyxia due to suffocation by unsafe bedding, with possible additional factors. Moodie is currently detained without bond and has appeared in court, with further proceedings scheduled for March 26.
