“Mother of Three in Blackmail Scheme Avoids Jail”

A 24-year-old mother of three from Grimsby, Demi Sweatman, who engaged in online blackmail by sending nude photos of herself to men for money while falsely claiming to be underage, has avoided jail time. Sweatman, along with her former partner, Charlie Anderson, admitted to their crimes in court.

The scheme involved Sweatman posting a photo on Instagram in May 2023, offering nude photos for a fee. Men who responded were coerced into sending money under the threat of exposure to their families and friends. One victim paid a total of £1,150, with some of the money being transferred to Anderson’s account.

After another incident on Facebook Dating in October 2024, where a student was similarly extorted for money, the police were contacted, leading to the arrest of Sweatman and Anderson. Despite initially denying the charges, Anderson eventually pleaded guilty to money laundering.

During the trial, it was revealed that both victims suffered from anxiety and fear due to the blackmail. Sweatman’s defense claimed she was coerced by Anderson, highlighting her lack of prior criminal record and being a mother of three. Anderson’s defense mentioned their tumultuous relationship and his remorse.

Ultimately, Judge Gurdial Singh handed down a suspended sentence of 11 months to Sweatman, along with community service and rehabilitation requirements. Anderson received a 16-month suspended sentence, community service, and rehabilitation activities. The judge condemned their actions as manipulative and deliberate, emphasizing the harm caused to the victims.
