“Mother detained indefinitely for stabbing disabled daughter”

A mother who stabbed her severely disabled daughter multiple times has been detained indefinitely. Carla Lovejoy, aged 54, attacked her 28-year-old daughter Isabella Lovejoy with a knife in their shared home in Broadstairs, Kent on March 20 last year. Isabella sustained life-threatening injuries after being stabbed around 12 to 14 times in the abdomen and chest, as revealed in court.

Following the incident, Lovejoy was discovered covered in blood and wielding a knife, with minor self-inflicted wounds. She confessed, stating, “I[‘ve] done a terrible thing. I had no choice.” Isabella, who suffers from Rett syndrome, underwent critical medical treatment and spent three months in the hospital before being placed under care, with reports indicating that timely medical intervention saved her life.

Lovejoy, who had been the primary caregiver for her daughter, was described in court as a devoted and caring mother. Despite her deteriorating mental state, she avoided seeking help from mental health services due to her fear of losing custody of her daughter. Reports presented in court revealed Lovejoy’s severe depression and psychotic symptoms, including beliefs in human sacrifice and living in a fantasy world.

After a trial in December, Lovejoy was convicted of attempted murder on the grounds that she was aware her actions were wrong despite her mental health condition. Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb sentenced Lovejoy to an indefinite hospital order with restrictions to safeguard the public from potential harm, acknowledging the severity of the harm inflicted on Isabella.

In a statement read in court, Lovejoy’s other daughter, Christina Roberts, expressed the profound impact of the incident on their family. She highlighted the breakdown of their family unit and the challenges faced by her non-verbal sister as a result of the attack. Roberts struggled to comprehend the events, emphasizing the strong bond between her mother and Isabella, which now stands irreparably damaged.

Addressing the court, prosecutor Laurence Imrie summarized Roberts’ statement, underscoring the irreplaceable loss suffered by Isabella and the ongoing fear of potential harm. In a plea for leniency, Lovejoy’s defense lawyer, Fiona Page KC, highlighted her client’s significant transformation post-incident. Despite this, Lovejoy remained stoic as Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb emphasized the irreversible consequences of her actions.
