Met Police Officer Convicted of Child Rape

A volunteer Met Police officer, previously known as James Bubb and now identifying as Gwyn Samuels, faced accusations of being a sexual predator by the victims affected. Two victims shared harrowing experiences in court, detailing how the individual had harmed them. One victim, who was groomed online and sexually assaulted at the age of 12, described Samuels as highly manipulative and dangerous.

Following a trial last summer, Samuels was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a child, as well as raping a woman while posing as a 16-year-old girl in an online interaction. The first victim, in her impact statement, condemned Samuels for betraying the oath taken as a special constable to protect the public, highlighting the stark contrast between his public service role and his private abusive behavior.

During the trial, evidence revealed that Samuels had assaulted the girl in public before her 13th birthday, displaying violent behavior towards her during the abuse. The victim recounted instances of choking and punching by Samuels. Despite being referred to by his biological sex throughout the trial, the judge acknowledged Samuels’ transition and addressed the defendant by the new identity, Gwyn Samuels, during sentencing.

The first victim expressed the lasting trauma caused by the abuse, emphasizing the breach of trust as a police officer. She disclosed struggles with complex PTSD and the profound impact on her ability to trust others. The woman’s testimony shed light on the manipulation tactics employed by Samuels, using his police officer status to instill fear and control over her.

Samuels was found guilty of multiple charges, including raping a child under 13, sexual activity with a child, and assault offenses. The offenses spanned from January 1, 2018, to April 2, 2024. The court learned that Samuels met the first victim on an online platform in 2018 before engaging in abusive behavior. Additionally, Samuels raped a woman he met when she turned 18, maintaining a tumultuous relationship that lasted until early 2023.

The second victim described feeling exploited by Samuels, leading to a traumatic pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage. She detailed instances of emotional manipulation and control, including threats of being sectioned and emergency calls. Samuels, residing in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, is awaiting sentencing at the same court the following week.
