Another school has confirmed that one of its students has been diagnosed with meningitis, according to the headmaster of Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys. The affected Year 13 pupil has been hospitalized with the illness, making this the third reported case in Kent, following instances at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham and Norton Knatchbull School in Ashford.
In related news, the University of Kent disclosed the unfortunate passing of one of its students. The student, identified as Juliette, was described as kind, thoughtful, and intelligent by her former headteacher at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School.
The headmaster of Simon Langton Grammar School expressed support for the affected student and their family, emphasizing that the school will continue operations as the overall risk is deemed low despite the concerning situation. Many students have sought antibiotics following the outbreak, with some individuals requiring induced comas.
The UK Health Security Agency reported 13 cases of suspected meningitis in the Canterbury area over the weekend. Efforts are underway to inform and educate students on the signs and symptoms of the disease, as well as the necessary steps to take if feeling unwell.
Amelia McIlroy, headteacher at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, shared heartfelt sentiments about Juliette’s passing, highlighting her positive impact on the school community. At Norton Knatchbull School, a year 13 student has also been diagnosed with meningitis and is receiving appropriate medical care.
As the situation unfolds, the University of Kent is closely following guidance from the UK Health Security Agency to ensure the safety of students and staff. Notably, in-person assessments and exams have been temporarily suspended, with alternative arrangements being made.
Trish Mannes from the UKHSA emphasized the importance of being vigilant for meningococcal disease symptoms, which can progress rapidly. Students and staff are urged to remain alert to potential signs of meningitis and seek prompt medical attention if necessary.
