“Maximize Your Holiday: How to Turn 8 Days into an 18-Day Break in May”

With the arrival of warmer weather in the UK, many individuals are looking forward to the upcoming months and planning to enjoy some sunshine. For most employees, their annual leave typically refreshes on either January 1 or April 1. As a result, numerous workers nationwide are now contemplating how to best utilize their time off.

The choice of how to use your accrued holidays is entirely up to you. Whether you prefer spending quality time with family, catching up with friends, or simply indulging in some self-care, a simple strategy could turn a standard eight-day holiday into an extended 18-day break in May.

This approach revolves around bank holidays and strategic scheduling. While similar tactics have been viable in past years, they are primarily beneficial for individuals who do not work weekends or have bank holidays included in their standard days off, without needing to allocate them as annual leave.

To secure an 18-day break in May, the process starts by requesting time off from Tuesday, May 5, to Friday, May 8. This amounts to four days of leave, but due to the bank holiday on Monday, May 4, you will enjoy a nine-day break from Saturday, May 2, to Sunday, May 10.

Following this, book off Tuesday, May 26, to Friday, May 29, for another nine days off using only four days of leave. This will result in a break from Saturday, May 23, to Sunday, May 31, as Monday, May 25, is also a bank holiday. Although bank holidays may vary based on your UK location, the two mentioned (May 4 and May 25) are applicable nationwide.
