“Massive Fire in Glasgow’s City Center Shuts Down Central Station”

A massive fire in Glasgow’s city center, which started on Sunday afternoon, is still being fought by more than a dozen fire engines. Due to this ongoing blaze, Glasgow Central station will be closed to passengers on Monday morning, as announced by rail operator ScotRail.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched crews to Union Street in Glasgow around 4pm on March 8. Firefighters are currently dealing with a significant fire in a shop next to the station on Union Street, with the flames engulfing multiple floors of the four-storey building where the fire originated. The fire service has deployed 15 fire appliances, along with specialized equipment such as high-reach vehicles and a water rescue unit.

ScotRail has confirmed that all train services to and from Glasgow Central high level will be suspended on Monday. While some ScotRail services will pass through the station, they will not stop at the high or low levels of Glasgow Central station. This closure is expected to cause significant disruption during Monday’s rush hour, with minimal replacement transport options available, according to ScotRail service delivery director Mark Ilderton.

Mark Ilderton stated, “Unfortunately, due to the impact of the nearby major fire, we will not be able to operate train services in or out of Glasgow Central high level tomorrow. Passengers are advised to check for alternative travel options and expect limited replacement transport. Updates can be found on our social media channels, website, or the ScotRail app.”

As of the latest update at 10:30 pm, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is still working to extinguish the large building fire on Union Street in Glasgow. Residents are advised to avoid the area if possible and keep windows closed. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties, and firefighting teams are continuing their efforts at the scene.
