“Masked Intruder Convicted 50 Years Later in Cold Case”

A man wearing a mask broke into a woman’s residence and sexually assaulted her, resulting in his conviction nearly fifty years later. David Sharp, a 66-year-old resident of Copland Meadows in Totnes, Devon, was found guilty of rape and indecent assault after a trial at Leeds Crown Court. He awaits sentencing on April 23, having committed the crime on October 2, 1977, when he was 18 years old.

The victim, a student at Leeds University, was awakened at 3am by the sound of the intruder breaking in through a window, as reported by West Yorkshire Police. Detective Sergeant Richard Ord emphasized the lasting impact on the victim, who vividly remembers the assault. Despite Sharp’s denial of the charges, compelling evidence led to his conviction, offering some closure to the victim.

Advancements in forensic science enabled the resolution of the case many years later, providing hope for other victims of unsolved crimes. The victim recalled the assailant wearing a ski mask during the assault, which remained unsolved until recent DNA analysis. Following a cold case review, a DNA match linked Sharp to the crime scene, confirming his presence in Leeds at the time.

Detective Sergeant Ord urged other potential victims to come forward, reassuring them that justice knows no time constraints. Reporting offenses, regardless of when they occurred, is pivotal in seeking closure and holding perpetrators accountable.
