Martin Lewis recently provided advice on how to reduce petrol or diesel usage by up to 30% through simple methods to enhance your vehicle’s efficiency. The Money Saving Expert (MSE) founder discussed these tips on a recent episode of his show on ITV.
Amid a surge in fuel prices due to disruptions in global oil production and shipping caused by the Middle East conflict, Lewis emphasized the significance of driving efficiently to save fuel. Smooth driving helps reduce energy wastage that typically converts into heat or extra exhaust.
One of his key suggestions is to eliminate unnecessary weight from your car, as every 45kg of additional weight decreases fuel efficiency by about 1%. Additionally, removing items from the roof rack can enhance aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.
Lewis also highlighted the importance of maintaining proper tire pressure, as underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by up to 4%. Furthermore, he advised being mindful of air conditioning usage, recommending turning it off at low speeds to improve fuel efficiency.
Emphasizing the impact of driving behavior, Lewis explained how accelerating and braking affect fuel consumption. Driving at consistent speeds, maintaining a safe distance, and anticipating road conditions can significantly improve fuel efficiency.
Studies indicate that adopting these efficiency measures and driving practices can lead to substantial fuel savings, ranging from 10% to 30%. Lewis encouraged drivers to consider these tips, especially during times of high fuel prices, as they can make a notable difference without requiring complex changes.
