“Man gets 17 years for hiding girlfriend’s body in fridge”

A man convicted of killing his girlfriend and hiding her body in a refrigerator has been sentenced to 17 years in prison. Christopher Blevins, 46, admitted to strangling Laura Hughes, a 50-year-old mother of two, and then concealing her remains in a forest. Surveillance footage captured Blevins transporting what appeared to be a fridge in his pickup truck around the time of the murder, leading to the discovery of Hughes’ body in December 2024.

In a remorseful statement relayed by his attorney, Blevins expressed regret, stating that he did not intend for the tragic event to occur and apologizing for the pain he caused. This declaration, however, offered little solace to Hughes’ grieving family and her two children.

During the sentencing, Cornel Alston, the father of Hughes’ children, emotionally addressed Blevins, asserting that no amount of time served could bring Hughes back and emphasizing that the killer should never experience freedom again. He emphasized the enduring impact on his children, who will carry the loss for the rest of their lives.

Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in solving the case and holding Blevins accountable for his actions. MacAulay praised the diligence of investigators from the New Jersey State Police and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office in uncovering the truth behind Hughes’ death, leading to Blevins’ guilty plea and subsequent sentencing.
