“Man Appeals to Lords for Compassion in Assisted Dying Debate”

A man, whose sister opted for assisted dying at Dignitas in Switzerland, is appealing to the House of Lords for compassion as he remembers their final conversation. Proponents of assisted dying will gather outside Parliament to commemorate the second anniversary of Paola Marra’s passing at Dignitas.

The poignant occasion coincides with the 11th Day of Committee Stage and Dying In Dignity advocates are urging the Lords to cease obstructing the bill and honor Paola’s memory. Before her passing, Paola, the former spouse of Blur drummer Dave Rowntree, battled excruciating pain from breast and bowel cancer. Despite her suffering, the 53-year-old filmmaker and charity worker set aside her pain to create a documentary advocating for a change in UK law.

Paola’s brother, Tony Marra, a 56-year-old actor and filmmaker residing in Canada, shared his emotional experience of their final video call from Dignitas. He expressed his deep regret at not being able to be physically present with his sister during her final moments but admired her determination to face her journey alone.

Reflecting on his sister’s courageous decision, Tony emphasized her strong will to leave a lasting impact by creating films that highlighted the importance of assisted dying. He also shed light on Paola’s struggles with her terminal illness, revealing the physical and emotional toll it took on her.

Tony also mentioned his wife’s battle with secondary breast cancer and their access to assisted dying services in Toronto. Meanwhile, Dying in Dignity, the organization behind the protest, emphasized the urgency of legislative change to prevent others from enduring similar hardships.

Despite opposition citing concerns of coercion and lack of safeguards in the proposed bill, supporters underscored the significant public backing and parliamentary endorsement received by the legislation. Independent MSP Jeremy Balfour raised apprehensions, particularly highlighting the fears of coercion among disabled individuals if assisted dying laws were enacted.
