“Liverpool Honors Late Striker Diogo Jota with Jersey Retirement”

Eight months have elapsed since the tragic passing of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. The duo, aged 28 and 25 respectively, lost their lives in a fatal car accident on July 3, 2025, while returning from Spain to Liverpool.

Diogo Jota, a Portuguese international, left behind his wife, Rute Cardoso, whom he had wed just 11 days before the incident, along with their three children. The football world was deeply shaken by the loss, with heartfelt tributes flooding in from across the globe.

In honor of their fallen No. 20, Liverpool decided to retire Jota’s jersey, amidst a sea of flowers placed by fans outside Anfield. Additionally, head coach Arne Slot announced that Fenway Sports Group would fulfill the remainder of Jota’s contract to support his family.

The financial commitment from Liverpool is estimated at around £14.4 million. Jota had previously extended his contract with Liverpool in 2022, earning £140,000 per week, with two years remaining on the deal at the time of the tragedy.

This gesture underscores the high esteem in which Jota was held by Liverpool. His contributions since joining from Wolves in 2020 were instrumental in the club’s victories in the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Premier League.

Reflecting on the profound impact of Jota’s passing, Slot praised the fans and players for their dignified response to the tragedy. The upcoming FA Cup fifth-round encounter between Liverpool and Wolves will be another poignant moment, as it marks the teams’ second meeting this week following Liverpool’s recent Premier League defeat to Wolves.

During the match, both sets of supporters united in honoring Jota, particularly in the 18th minute, symbolizing the first encounter between the clubs at Molineux since the brothers’ untimely deaths. A banner displayed by Liverpool fans read: ‘Obrigado Diogo, forever our number 20.’

Having spent three seasons at Wolves before his move to Liverpool, Jota made a significant impact, contributing to their Premier League promotion. His legacy at Liverpool includes 182 appearances and 65 goals.
