“Labour Party Politician Naz Shah Overcomes Adversity”

Naz Shah witnessed her father attacking her mother when she was just five years old. She vividly recalls her mother’s helpless gaze, prompting her to seek assistance from their neighbors to halt the assault. This incident marked the beginning of Naz’s lifelong dedication to protecting her mother.

As a member of the Labour Party representing Bradford West, Naz faced tumultuous times as her mother was imprisoned for murder when she was 20. Left destitute after her father abandoned the family, they endured harsh living conditions, leading to health issues like tuberculosis for Naz and her siblings. Her mother, Zoora, fell prey to abuse from a community leader, Mohamed Azam, who subjected her to rape and violence, eventually pushing her to take drastic measures to protect her children.

Despite initial suspicions and challenges with the authorities, it was revealed that Zoora resorted to lacing sweets with arsenic to fend off her abuser’s advances towards her daughters. Naz’s unwavering support for her mother during her trial and incarceration shed light on the true narrative behind Zoora’s actions, shifting public perception of the case.

Years later, after extensive advocacy efforts by Naz, her siblings, and activist groups, Zoora’s sentence was reduced, allowing her eventual release from prison in 2006. Naz’s own journey from adversity to becoming a prominent figure in politics reflects her resilience and determination to combat injustice and inequality.

Launching her memoir, “Honoured: Survival, Strength and My Path to Politics,” on International Women’s Day, Naz aims to empower other women to share their stories of resilience. Her experiences have shaped her outlook on life, instilling in her a sense of gratitude for breaking free from the cycle of trauma and providing a better future for her children.

Despite facing personal struggles and challenges, Naz remains steadfast in her pursuit of justice and equality, drawing inspiration from her mother’s resilience in the face of adversity. Through her remarkable journey, she exemplifies strength, determination, and a commitment to creating a better world for future generations.
