Labour MP Joani Reid has decided to temporarily remove herself from the Labour whip pending the completion of internal investigations following the arrest of her husband on suspicion of espionage for China. Joani Reid represents East Kilbride and Strathaven and clarified that she is not personally under scrutiny or accused of any misconduct. Her decision to suspend herself from Sir Keir Starmer’s party follows the news of her husband, David Taylor, being one of three individuals arrested on suspicion of spying for China.
Joani Reid stated that she will refrain from sitting as a Labour MP until the investigation is finalized. A Labour Party spokesperson mentioned that she is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Expressing the challenges she is facing, Joani Reid emphasized that she has not engaged in any wrongdoing and reiterated her commitment to serving her constituents and the Labour Party. She emphasized that she is not a subject of police investigation or any accusations.
The other individuals arrested alongside Joani Reid’s husband are Matthew Alpin, a former Labour press officer, and Steve Jones, a former special adviser for the Welsh Government. All three individuals were released on bail. While the investigation continues, the Metropolitan Police, along with Scottish and Welsh counter-terror police, conducted searches at the arrest locations and additional properties in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff.
The trio has been bailed until May, and authorities will continue their inquiries. Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized that there is no immediate or direct threat associated with these arrests.
