Top jockey Nico de Boinville has been exonerated from alleged ‘racist remarks’ toward an Irish rider during the Cheltenham Festival. De Boinville and Declan Queally had a confrontation as they vied for position at the start of the Turners’ Novices’ Hurdle.
ITV cameras captured part of the incident, showing a visibly upset de Boinville shouting at Queally to move aside. Following this, Queally filed a complaint with the stewards, claiming that de Boinville had made racially insensitive comments during the chaotic start of the first race on Wednesday’s schedule.
Queally expressed his dismay on ITV Racing, stating, “Being verbally attacked by an English rider, Nico de Boinville, was unpleasant. As an amateur, it was distressing to be riding in front of my children.”
In response to Queally’s account of the race’s challenging start, De Boinville retorted, “Perhaps he should introspect.”
Although they later reconciled with an uncomfortable handshake staged for the cameras, the Cheltenham stewards proceeded with an investigation.
The published report on Wednesday confirmed Queally’s allegation that de Boinville had made “racially charged remarks” towards him. The report acknowledged a verbal altercation with intense language between de Boinville and Queally.
After reviewing all evidence, the stewards found that while strong language was used by de Boinville towards Queally at the start, there was no proof that racist comments were made. The stewards reminded de Boinville of his responsibilities to conduct himself professionally, particularly in high-pressure situations at prestigious events broadcast nationally.
In a highly competitive environment like horse racing, emotions can escalate, but participants are expected to adhere to the Rules of Racing and Code of Conduct. The stewards emphasized the need for language and behavior to align with the professional setting of televised events.
