JD.com Launches Joybuy Platform in UK, Eyes European Markets

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its new Joybuy platform in the UK in a bid to compete with major players like Amazon. The company, valued at £30 billion, offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, groceries, and more. Popular brands such as Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal are among the household names featured on the platform.

Joybuy promises next-day delivery for orders exceeding £29 in London and several other cities like Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, reaching approximately 17 million residents. Furthermore, the platform provides a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed before 11 am, ensuring delivery by 11 pm. JD.com has set up its own logistics network with distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton to support these services.

The expansion into the UK market follows JD.com’s decision to step back from acquisition talks involving major British retailers in recent years. While contemplating a potential purchase of Currys in 2024, the company withdrew from discussions regarding a takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s last September. Executives express confidence in JD.com’s long-term presence in the UK, emphasizing the appeal of their product range, competitive pricing, and convenience to attract new clientele.

Matthew Nobbs, the managing director of Joybuy UK, affirmed the company’s commitment to sustained growth in the UK market, stating, “We are here for a long time, as our CEO has said. We have invested significant effort in refining our website and app offerings, ensuring a seamless customer experience during beta testing.”

In addition to the UK launch, JD.com is set to enter other European markets including Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The company recently finalized a 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) acquisition of Germany-based electronics retailer Ceconomy, signaling its aggressive expansion strategy.
