The Asian Football Federation has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 World Cup, despite concerns raised by President Donald Trump amid ongoing tensions between the USA, Israel, and Iran.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino reassured that Iran would be included in the upcoming tournament to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. However, Trump expressed reservations, stating that it might not be safe for the Iranian team to compete due to the current situation. Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, also mentioned that logistical constraints could hinder their participation following recent events, including the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an airstrike.
While a final decision is pending on Iran’s involvement in the World Cup, Windsor John, the head of the Asian Football Confederation, emphasized that Iran is still expected to take part in the competition.
John, speaking from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, highlighted the importance of the federation’s decision, stating that they have been informed that Iran intends to join the World Cup. He expressed hope that Iran would resolve any issues they are facing and be able to participate in the tournament as qualified members of the federation.
President Trump shared his views on Iran’s participation through social media, indicating his concerns for the safety of the Iranian team. Despite his reservations, he officially welcomed the Iran National Soccer Team to the World Cup.
Iran secured its place in the World Cup by winning Group A in the third round of AFC qualifying matches. The process to replace Iran in the tournament would involve considering the next highest ranked AFC teams that have not yet qualified, such as Iraq and the United Arab Emirates.
