Iran’s high-ranking security official, Ali Larijani, has been confirmed dead, marking a significant loss to Iran’s leadership following the recent passing of supreme leader Ali Kahmeni. The Iranian Supreme National Security Council, as reported by state-affiliated Mehr news, has verified Larijani’s death in an airstrike attributed to Israel. Additionally, Iran acknowledged the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of the country’s internal Basij militia, in the same official statement.
The supreme national security council of Iran officially announced Ali Larijani’s passing, stating, “The martyrs’ pure souls have embraced the purified soul of God’s righteous servant, Martyr Dr. Ali Larijani. After a lifetime dedicated to advancing Iran and the Islamic Revolution, he realized his long-held aspiration, heeded the divine call, and nobly achieved martyrdom in the service trench.”
The statement further mentioned that Larijani’s son and bodyguards also perished with him. Larijani, recognized as one of Iran’s most influential figures, held the position of secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and was renowned for his resolute nature, behind-the-scenes influence, and formidable presence.
Assuming the role of SNSC secretary in August 2025 as the late Supreme Leader’s representative, Larijani was often described as Iran’s most influential figure and de facto leader. He was a key advisor to the late Kahmeni and a trusted confidant.
In his capacity as SNSC secretary, Larijani played a pivotal role as the chief negotiator on national security matters, notably concerning Iran’s nuclear program. Previously, he served as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator from 2005 to 2007 and was actively engaged in discussions with the European Union and United Nations during that period. Iran’s actions, including barring entry to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, have drawn global attention regarding the safe utilization of nuclear energy.
