Iran has decided not to participate in the upcoming World Cup this summer due to conflicts with Israel and the United States, as announced by the country’s sports minister. The decision comes amidst rising tensions in the Middle East.
The tournament is scheduled to be held in America, Canada, and Mexico, where Iran is placed in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. Despite the tournament commencing on June 11, Iran’s sports minister, Ahmad Donyamal, confirmed their intention to boycott the event.
Citing the assassination of their leader by what he described as a corrupt government, the sports minister stated that Iran could not partake in the World Cup under the current circumstances. He emphasized that recent hostile actions against Iran had led to significant loss of life, making their participation impossible.
Iran’s withdrawal before the tournament’s start poses a challenge for FIFA, as no qualified nation has ever boycotted the World Cup for political reasons.

The absence of African teams in the 1966 tournament as a protest against FIFA’s allocation of limited spots for certain confederations, and the near boycott by the Soviet Union in 1974 over political reasons were also discussed. More recent events, like tensions during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where all 32 qualified teams participated amid demonstrations regarding human rights violations and LGBT issues, were mentioned.
