Iran’s national football team has reacted to a warning from Donald Trump urging them to steer clear of the upcoming World Cup by demanding that the USA should withdraw instead. The World Cup, scheduled for this summer, has been thrown into turmoil after a joint missile strike by the United States and Israel on Iran’s supreme leader two weeks ago, leading to a violent conflict.
The country’s sports minister declared that Iran will not participate in the World Cup under any circumstances, despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggesting that Trump would be open to their presence. However, President Trump later stated that Iran should not attend the tournament for their own safety and well-being.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed, “The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety.”
Iran’s team has retaliated against Trump’s remarks, asserting that they cannot be excluded from the tournament. They emphasized that the World Cup is an international event organized by FIFA, not any individual country.
“The Iranian national team earned their place at this prestigious event through impressive victories, and they are one of the first teams to qualify for this major tournament. Certainly, no entity has the authority to eliminate the Iranian national team from the World Cup,” the team stated.
Furthermore, they argued that the focus should be on ensuring security for all participating teams rather than singling out Iran. The World Cup is set to commence in less than 100 days, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico jointly hosting the event. Iran excelled in the qualifying rounds, topping both of their groups and suffering only one defeat out of 16 matches.
Despite Iranian fans being prohibited from traveling to the U.S., the team was granted an exemption. However, with the sports minister’s announcement, doubts have been cast on Iran’s participation. Mehdi Taj, the head of Iran’s football federation, questioned the rationale of jeopardizing the national team’s safety in such circumstances.
