Witnesses are scheduled to provide testimony at an inquest set to take place tomorrow regarding the final moments of the individual found guilty of killing British backpacker Peter Falconio.
The coroner in Australia will receive input from medical professionals and prison personnel concerning the passing of Bradley John Murdoch while in custody. It is unlikely that any new details related to the crime that stunned the global audience will emerge.
There is uncertainty surrounding whether Murdoch left any hints in his personal effects within his prison cell or the hospital room where he passed away. The inquest is being conducted by Northern Territory coroner Elisabeth Armitage as per standard Australian legal procedure.
The proceedings are anticipated to span a single day, during which the coroner will hear testimonies from healthcare providers and correctional staff who attended to Murdoch during his final illness.
In 2005, Murdoch was convicted of the murder of Falconio, a 28-year-old British traveler from West Yorkshire, following a widely publicized trial that captivated both Australia and the United Kingdom.
Falconio was shot on a secluded highway near Barrow Creek in July 2001 while journeying around Australia with his partner Joanne Lees, who survived the assault and later provided crucial testimony at Murdoch’s trial.
Lees recounted how a man waved down their vehicle before shooting Falconio and trying to abduct her. She managed to flee, hiding in the outback for hours before seeking help.
Subsequently, Murdoch was apprehended and found guilty after DNA evidence linked him to the crime. Following Murdoch’s demise the previous year, Falconio’s father Luciano expressed his desire that Murdoch had left behind some trace for him to discover his son.
Reflecting on Murdoch’s passing, the 83-year-old, speaking from his home at Hepworth, appeared stunned and struggled to articulate his thoughts upon learning of the killer’s death.
Expressing his sentiments, he mentioned, “He has passed away, oh dear. You heard me say, ‘oh dear,’ that’s my goodwill towards anybody. I don’t wish harm on anyone because life is precious, and if you’ve been given that gift of life…I don’t even know what to say.” He then sought confirmation of Murdoch’s demise, absorbing the news of the culprit succumbing to terminal illness.
