Gianni Infantino remains optimistic about the upcoming World Cup despite concerns arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The tournament, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has been affected by escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly involving Israel, the US, and Iran.
With the Middle East conflict now in its tenth day, the situation has caused disruptions in the region, impacting travel and raising questions about Iran’s participation in the World Cup. The Iraqi Football Federation has requested a postponement of their World Cup play-off due to logistical challenges stemming from the war, just 93 days before the tournament’s scheduled start on June 11.
Despite these challenges, Infantino remains focused on highlighting the positive aspects of the event. He expressed enthusiasm for the overwhelming interest in the World Cup, citing over 500 million ticket requests within four weeks. The FIFA president emphasized the excitement in the host countries and the unprecedented scale of the tournament, featuring 48 teams, 104 matches, across 16 cities in three nations.
While concerns persist about Iran’s potential withdrawal from the World Cup and security issues in Mexico related to drug cartel violence, both FIFA and US Soccer officials are emphasizing their commitment to a safe and inclusive tournament. US President Donald Trump also expressed confidence in the progress of the conflict and the US’s stance, stressing the importance of ensuring a successful event.
Security measures in Mexico, including plans to deploy 100,000 security personnel to safeguard fans, have been put in place to address safety concerns. Infantino expressed satisfaction with these arrangements, underscoring his belief in the successful and spectacular nature of the upcoming World Cup.
