Reports indicate that Ian Huntley, the Soham murderer, made a purchase of an Xbox game with a disturbing title shortly before his death. Huntley, aged 52, passed away in hospital after being assaulted in HMP Frankland’s workshop on February 26. Having been sentenced to life in prison for the 2002 murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, Huntley had ordered the game Dark Souls: Prepare to Die for Xbox before the incident. The game was delivered to the prison three days after his demise, sparking conversations among inmates at the facility, known as ‘Monster Mansion.’
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die involves players breaking a curse by fulfilling an ancient prophecy, engaging in battles to earn souls and enhance weapons during gameplay. A prison source revealed that the game’s unexpected arrival post-Huntley’s death prompted discussion and jokes among inmates about the situation. The source added that despite Huntley losing his Xbox privileges in January due to misconduct, unauthorized items like DVDs, USB sticks, and magazines were found in his cell, leading to the confiscation of his gaming console.
Durham Constabulary confirmed that Anthony Russell, also incarcerated at HMP Frankland, has been charged with Huntley’s murder. Russell appeared in Teesside Crown Court via videolink for a brief preliminary hearing and is scheduled for a pre-trial preparation hearing on April 24 at Newcastle Crown Court.
