Funeral Home Owner Jailed 18 Years for Fraud

A former funeral home owner, Carie Hallford, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for defrauding grieving families by providing fake ashes in urns instead of the actual remains of their loved ones. Along with her ex-husband Jon Hallford, she committed fraud amounting to $130,000 in funeral expenses from customers for services that were never provided.

Carie Hallford pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud, admitting to deceiving both customers and the federal government. The fraudulent activities also extended to misusing $900,000 in COVID-19 pandemic aid meant for small businesses. The US Attorney for the District of Colorado, Peter McNeilly, expressed shock at the lack of respect for human dignity displayed by the Hallfords.

Amanda Koldjeski, the FBI Denver special agent in charge of the case, highlighted Carie’s exploitation of grieving families and governmental systems to benefit herself. The couple diverted government loans meant for their business to purchase luxury items like high-end cars, cryptocurrency, and designer brands such as Gucci and Tiffany & Co. Carie Hallford faces additional state charges and has been ordered to pay $1.07 million in restitution.

The Hallfords’ wrongdoing included mishandling approximately 190 bodies, with Carie primarily responsible for financial and administrative tasks within the funeral home. They were arrested in 2023 after close to 200 badly preserved bodies were discovered at their former business, Return Nature Funeral Home, located in Penrose, Colorado.
